The Benefits of Lanolin for Skin Health

When it comes to natural skincare, one of the most effective ingredients for deep hydration and protection is lanolin. This natural emollient, derived from sheep’s wool, closely mimics the lipids found in human skin, making it an exceptional moisturizer. Rich in beneficial fats and protective elements, lanolin helps to lock in moisture, repair the skin barrier, and provide lasting softness.

Where Lanolin Comes From and How It Is Extracted

Lanolin is obtained from the wool of sheep, making it a by product of the wool industry. It is extracted through a purification process that begins with washing the raw wool to remove dirt and debris. The wool is then processed to separate the natural oils, which are further refined to eliminate impurities and any residual pesticides. The final result is a clean, hypoallergenic lanolin that is safe for use in skincare and cosmetic products.

Lanolin's use in skincare dates back to the Ancient Greeks and was widely used up until the 1960's when a rise in chemicals used in farming made some people react most probably to the chemical residues in the lanolin as allergies to pure lanolin are rare and chemicals can be left behind if the processing techniques aren't great, nowadays it is collected from sheeps wool by centrifuge. It doesn't hurt the sheep at all, in fact shearing is absolutely essential for sheep welfare. Lanolin is really similar to our own sebum but also contains triglycerides with molecules resembling our own lipids plumping out the skin, reducing water loss by up to 30% and reducing the appearance of lines. It can penetrate the lip barrier making it ideal for chapped lips, delivering moisture deep down instead of just sitting on top of the skin.

The Unique Fat Ratios in Lanolin

One of the standout features of lanolin is its high fat content, which plays a crucial role in moisturizing and protecting the skin. Compared to other emollients, lanolin has a uniquely balanced composition, including:

  • Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs): These fats provide deep hydration, reinforcing the skin’s natural barrier to prevent moisture loss and shield against environmental stressors.

  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids: These essential fatty acids help soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and support overall skin balance.

  • Cholesterol and Waxes: These natural compounds closely resemble the skin’s lipid barrier, making lanolin an ideal emollient for preventing dryness and improving skin elasticity.

Skin-Nourishing Benefits of Lanolin

In addition to its rich fat content, lanolin is a powerhouse of skin-enhancing properties, including:

  • Superior Moisturization: Lanolin is an occlusive agent, meaning it creates a protective layer on the skin, sealing in moisture and preventing dehydration.

  • Enhanced Skin Barrier Function: Its lipid-rich structure helps restore and maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier, making it especially beneficial for those with dry or sensitive skin.

  • Softening and Healing Properties: Lanolin aids in repairing cracked, rough, and damaged skin, making it an essential ingredient in balms, creams, and lip treatments.

  • Non-Comedogenic & Gentle: Unlike synthetic emollients, lanolin absorbs efficiently into the skin without clogging pores, making it suitable for all skin types.

How to Use Lanolin for Skin Care

Lanolin can be found in a variety of our skincare products, from nourishing balms to lip salves and sheeps milk soaps, although we do a lovely plant based version of all of those! It can also be used in its pure form as an intensive moisturizer for particularly dry areas like elbows, hands, and heels. Applying a small amount of lanolin to damp skin enhances absorption, maximizing its hydrating benefits.
